Cardiff launches autumn clean-up drive to tackle litter

Big Cardiff Tidy will launch this autumn, spanning September 18 to October 4, as organizers push for broader resident involvement to clear the city’s streets, parks, and public areas. The initiative, coordinated by Keep Wales Tidy, Love Where You Live, and Cardiff Rivers Group, responds to persistent littering trends in the capital. Last year over 800 participants took part, collecting over 1,165 bags of litter through more than 114 clean-up events involving individuals, schools, community groups, businesses and local residents. This year, they are urging even more individuals and organizations to register their own cleanup activities.
Dave King, representing Cardiff Rivers Group, pointed to the environmental harm caused by litter and flytipping, often driven by a small number of offenders. His organization collaborates year-round with Cardiff Council, the Harbour Authority, and other partners to tackle the issue. The campaign is funded by the Cardiff Resilience Fund in partnership with Cardiff Council. Its focus remains on enhancing cleanliness in residential areas, parks, and green spaces.
Owen Derbyshire, CEO of Keep Wales Tidy, noted last year’s progress, where volunteers visibly improved Cardiff’s streets and waterways. He said the Big Cardiff Tidy demonstrates the positive impact that can be achieved when residents, community groups, businesses and public bodies work together. The campaign’s organizers stress that sustained community effort, from schools and businesses to individual residents, is essential for lasting change. Registration for events opens through Keep Wales Tidy’s official channels.

Cllr Ed Stubbs, Cardiff Council’s Cabinet Member for Frontline Services, highlighted the council’s long-term commitment to litter-picking programs. He said the Love Where You Live campaign supports community groups that volunteer their time to carry out litter picks across Cardiff. The Big Cardiff Tidy campaign offers another opportunity for collective action toward a cleaner city. While challenges persist, organizers emphasize that coordinated efforts can deliver tangible results.
This year’s push for expanded participation aims to replicate and amplify last year’s outcomes. The campaign’s success hinges on broad engagement, ensuring that every neighborhood contributes to a healthier urban environment.
