Protecting digital identity from cyber threats

Digital identity encompasses far more than login credentials—it includes every piece of data tied to an individual’s online presence, from usernames and email addresses to financial records and device identifiers. Catherine Beukes, an IT Security Specialist at Letshego Holdings Namibia, draws a parallel between digital identity and a physical ID, emphasizing its role in confirming a person’s online authenticity.
Just as an ID card verifies a person’s identity in person, a digital identity verifies who they are online. If criminals gain access to key elements of that information, they can use it to impersonate a person, take over accounts, or commit fraud in that person’s name.
Protecting a digital identity is central to protecting privacy, financial security, and personal trust. Beukes emphasizes that it’s not a technical nicety, but a necessary measure to prevent cybercriminals from exploiting personal information.
Strengthening a digital identity starts with the basics, such as using strong, unique passwords and avoiding password reuse across accounts. Email deserves particular attention, as it’s often the master key used to reset other accounts, and should be secured with both a strong password and multi-factor authentication.
A password manager can help store and recall passwords securely. Customers should also avoid granting remote access to their devices and never entertain unexpected callers who ask them to install remote-access software, as this can hand a stranger direct access to a device and its banking information.
If a device or account is compromised, responding quickly is critical. A customer who suspects they’ve been scammed should stop all contact with the suspected scammer, secure their accounts, and change passwords. They should also report the incident to official channels and the police, providing evidence such as messages, screenshots, and transaction references.
Customers should stay alert to “recovery scams,” where someone offers to recover lost money for a fee. Such requests should be verified independently before making a payment. Reporting suspicious activity helps prevent scams from happening to others, and there is no shame in being targeted.
